🐴 Paco – Our Little “El Diabolo” with the Biggest Heart At Hearts Animal Sanctuary, every animal has a story. Paco’s just happens to come with a little mischief… and a lot of survival. Paco is our only donkey. He lives alongside six big horses, and somehow, this small, cheeky soul holds his own. He’s known around here as “El Diabolo” — the little devil — because he can be wild, playful, and full of character. But behind that spark is a past that could have broken him. When Paco was younger, he was run over by a wagon. His hip was broken. He was sent away to recover, and although the bone healed, his body still carries the mark of that trauma — a dip in his side where the hip once shattered. It’s a quiet reminder of what he survived. During COVID, Paco was living on a finca with Lorenzo. Neither of them were being fed properly. They were thin. Forgotten. Struggling. Six years ago, we brought them both home. Here, Paco found friendship, safety, and full hay nets. He found space to bray, to play, to argue with the horses and then cuddle up beside them. He found routine, care, and someone who would notice if he wasn’t quite himself. And he lost his best friend. Just before Christmas, we said goodbye to Lorenzo at the age of 33. Paco felt that loss. We all did. The field feels different without him. But Paco carries on — a little stubborn, a little naughty, but deeply loved. Every winter night, Paco wears his rug so he stays warm and snug. Every day, he needs feed, bedding, farrier care, and ongoing monitoring because of that old hip injury. Rescue doesn’t end the day an animal arrives. It continues every single day after.
