Left Blind, Starving, and Forgotten on a Hillside… Most people drove past the horse on the hill and never stopped. But one day… someone did. And that decision changed Oreo’s life forever. (Read the full story below 👇) Oreo’s Story Some animals arrive quietly… carrying stories written in scars, silence, and suffering. Oreo was one of those animals. Before he ever came to Hearts Animal Sanctuary, Oreo lived a lonely life on the side of a hill in Tenerife. There was no field full of friends, no warm stable, no gentle hand brushing his coat. Just a hillside… and waiting. Food was not given with care or kindness. Instead it was thrown from the road when his owner happened to pass by. Some days he ate. Some days he didn’t. Slowly, the strong horse he should have been began to disappear. He grew thinner and thinner. But the worst part wasn’t the hunger. Both of Oreo’s eyes became badly infected. Thick yellow pus ran down his face, sticking to his fur, left untreated for so long that flies gathered around the wounds. The infection burned and festered, day after day, with no help coming. Until the day his life finally changed. When we saw him, we knew he couldn’t stay there another moment. Oreo was taken straight away and sent directly to the animal hospital in Gran Canaria, where vets began working immediately to try and save his sight and stabilise his condition. For 10 long days, he stayed in hospital undergoing tests, treatment, and care he had never received before. After that, Oreo made the journey to us here in Fuerteventura, to begin the long road back to health. It wasn’t quick. “Please read until the end — Oreo’s ending will make you smile.” For six months, we cleaned and treated his eyes every single day. Slowly, patiently, carefully. The infections had already caused permanent damage, and sadly Oreo would never regain full sight. Today he has about 40% vision. But what he lost in eyesight, he gained in something far more important. A life. The weight slowly returned to his body. His coat began to shine again. His spirit came back. The scared, suffering horse we first met slowly disappeared, replaced by a calm, gentle boy who now enjoys his days with friends, food, and the safety he should always have known. And Oreo’s story didn’t end there. He went on to become the father of a very special little horse here at the sanctuary… Destiny. From a neglected horse left suffering on a hillside, to a proud father living safely among friends — Oreo’s life shows just how powerful compassion can be.
